Sturgis

What can I say?  Sturgis is Sturgis….

Why is Sturgis popular?  Per the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau:

“In 1938, J.C. “Pappy” Hoel hosted a dirt track race with nine riders that set a course in Sturgis history. Today, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has evolved into South Dakota’s largest tourism event and the world’s largest motorcycle rally. Sturgis and the Black Hills thunder with the sounds of motorcycle enthusiasts, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, from all over the world.”

Except for 1942,  the rally has continued every year since.    At the end of July and beginning of August, like a spiderweb, a wave and trail of motorcycles across the country converge on this small South Dakota town.  Sure it’s a lot of people and the weather is hot, humid and unpredictable.  Yes it is over priced these days, the same vendors show up, the same bars, same scenery, not much changes year to year….  I could tell you where certain vendors are located in Sturgis, best places for t-shirts, cold beer, and where to go for what kind of food you want….  Been there so many times I don’t need a map to get to Sturgis from SoCal, I know all the different ways.

But for some reason, every August, I find myself wanting to go for some reason.  The ride out to Sturgis is fun and beautiful.  The people I have gone with, the people I have met along the way over the years are engrained in my mind.  The endless stories we all have on just riding there and back.  And you can feel the buzz when you get there as fellow motorcycle enthusiast are gathering for two weeks.

And when I get there, yup, it’s a shit show… what am I doing here….

I don’t know, but I love it.

Go ahead and google Sturgis rally – endless info on it.
